A new banner for Ordinary Timedesigned and made by Joan Sedgwick Joan writes: A few members of the altar guild asked if I would be interested in working on a banner for Ordinary Time. I was up for a creative challenge and thought it would be an opportunity to use some blue and green batik quilting fabrics that I had on hand, as green is the colour associated with Ordinary Time. I chose to use images of water and fish as they have symbolic value for Christians, and appear frequently in the Scriptures. Water is life-giving, cleansing, and used in the sacrament of Baptism. The Greek word for fish ‘Ichthys’, is an acrostic for ‘Jesus Christ, Son of God, Saviour’ and the fish symbol was believed to be used to identify oneself as a Christian in the early church. Fish appear frequently in the gospels – the miracle of the fish and the loaves, the miraculous catch of fish by the disciples and the breakfast of roasted fish on the beach with Jesus. For me, these stories represent faith and God’s abundant provision for us in creation and so I have tried to capture this in a vibrant way in the banner. |

Church picnic - save the dateSunday, June 23, 2024 At the service nearest the end of the academic year, on June 23rd there will be a special prayer and blessing for those graduating from any level or program of education this year, or for those transitioning from one school to another. Please send Allen names of people you know so we may celebrate their achievement together (incumbent@stphilipvictoria.ca). Also, please join us on the lawn right after the 9.30 service on June 23rd for fun and fellowship at our parish picnic. If you can, bring your own chair and/or picnic blanket. Picnic food will be provided, including salads/veggie trays, hotdogs and ice cream; vegetarian and gluten-free options will be available. Notwithstanding this, you are welcome to contribute a salad or other dish! Although we are trying to keep the picnic simple, volunteers will be needed to set up and take down tables, work in the kitchen, clean up, and grill the hotdogs. Sign-up sheets for all these things will be in the narthex. - Larry Anthony and Ceal McLean, Wardens |

Veggie Gardeners - Grow A Rowfor Shelbourne Community Kitchen Dear St. Philip Community One of the missions we support as a church is the Shelbourne Community Kitchen. We are hoping to provide them with some fresh produce this summer by asking parishioners who love to garden to “grow a row”. It is easy to do and any amount is appreciated. Please see below for more information. If you participate, please take some pictures of your planting or harvest with your family and post them downstairs on the Shelbourne Community Kitchen board, or email digital images to admin@stphilipvictoria, so we can all enjoy your good works. There are also opportunities to volunteer in the Kitchen and work with others to prepare nutritious meals for the community. FYI They serve about 1500 people regularly! Details are linked below and of course on their website https://www.shelbournecommunitykitchen.ca/ - Jackie Prowse for the St Philip Missions Committee images: Shelbourne Community Kitchen For more infomation visit:

PWRDF: Mapping exercise facilitators needed to promote truth and reconciliation
Next year will mark the 10th anniversary of the release of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Final Report and of the launch of PWRDF’s Mapping the Ground We Stand On (Mapping Exercise) workshop. This education for reconciliation resource is available both in-person and online and is offered to parishes, educational institutions, and community groups by trained volunteer facilitators. PWRDF is looking to grow that small but mighty group from its current roster of nine. The workshop is an opportunity to enter onto the land we now call Canada using a large floor map, to see and understand the depth and breadth of Indigenous presence and knowledge embedded in the land, and to experience the history and impact of settler arrival. Each participant – be they Indigenous or settler – brings themselves and their family’s history with them as together we step onto the land, learning from it and from one another. We are looking for individuals from any part of the country with a passion for presenting, listening and learning. If you, or someone you know is interested in becoming a Mapping Exercise Facilitator but have some questions, please contact me at srumsey@pwrdf.org or Kim Umbach, our Volunteer Coordinator. The deadline to apply is June 30, 2024. The training will take place in Toronto on September 6 and 7, 2024. Suzanne Rumsey is PWRDF’s Public Engagement Program Coordinator, and one of the designers of the Mapping Exercise.
