Financial update - April 2025
Here is a summary of Parish income and expenses for April 2025:
Expenses: $24,100, of which
Balance: $11,600 Note that this accounting reflects the date of bank deposits or cheques cashing, rather than when the expenses occurred or donation was made. The ‘Other’ income line reflects two transactions: $9,400 in annual interest on parish savings, and $4,600 in GST rebates for the past three years. Notable ‘Other’ expenses included a $700 Missions item supporting Our Place, $1,100 for our ongoing website and social media work, and $1,100 in utility payments. - Mark Laidlaw, Treasurer |

A new kind of pfishing gear.svg file attachments There is a new(er) phishing file type in town: attachments in Scalable Vector Graphics format, or .svg An email arrived in the parish office inbox (and all the other Island admins) looking like an automatic to-do list reminder from (maybe) my own email calendar/task list. The attachment was ToDoList.svg . This message didn't include any of the common sketchy text errors to detect, since there was no message at all. But I wasn't expecting that .svg file extension: when in doubt, look it up. And don't open the attachments! More about .svg files and what the messages may look like https://news.sophos.com/en-us/2025/02/05/svg-phishing/ More about recognizing spam and phishing emails: https://www.stphilipvictoria.ca/news/phishing - Anna For more infomation visit:

God is More Involved With You Than You Think!Learning to Pray the Examen There is still time to sign up for the Wednesday online or Thursday in-person sessions of Fr. Allen's series on Examen Prayer, which start this coming week. Both sessions have enough enrolment to run. In this four-part series, Fr. Allen will teach the basics of the Examen and encourage us to share our learning and struggles as we practice various aspects of the Examen together and on our own. Schedule - 2 parallel sessions:
Please sign up to register interest for either session, on the sheets in the narthex or online: Register for Examen Wednesday evenings on Zoom Register for Examen Thursday mornings in person Do sign up for the Thursday session even if you are a 'regular' and/or plan to attend the Thursday morning service as well, so that we have a contact list for sending out info and readings before the series starts. And if you're planning to attend the Thursday Examen study, please consider attending the 10am service immediately before it as well, as it creates an important spiritual context. Singing circle
This is an invitation for people of all ages to enjoy a time of informal singing and making music. Chris and Alix Harvey would like to invite people with or without instruments to join us at the church, and at a time that is determined to be convenient for participants. Your musical preferences and talents are not crucial- we will construct a song bank based on what you want to sing. This may be a one-time event or if there is enthusiasm, we are keen to continue. If you are interested and would like to take part, email Chris . <flashharvey@gmail.com> Photo by Tomás Robertson on Unsplash For more infomation visit:

St Philip's Cookbook
A copy of the St Philip cookbook has recently made its way back to the parish! The recipes were "prepared by the women of St Philip's Anglican Church, Victoria, BC" for (maybe as a fundraiser for?) the dedication of St Philip's on 1 May 1976. The book was prepared by Stephanie Williams, with the assistance of Eileen Ball, Susan Blyth, and Merle Campbell. The cover drawing is by Harry Olden, with interior chapter-heading doodles by Colin Ball. Now the cookbook is available (again) for all to browse, cook, and enjoy! Next year will be the 50th anniversary of the dedication. What recipes might be included in a new parish cookbook? For more infomation visit:

Hope & Belonging! Benefit ConcertWest Coast REACH Association - Saturday, May 24, 2025 What a great combination of good causes! REACH does such good work providing opportunities for disabled folks to participate in music. - Dave and Zita Conway On May 24th, a very special concert will take place in Victoria for a very important and worthy cause. We're sure the audience will be inspired. We'd also love for you to come and experience this firsthand yourself. The HOPE AND BELONGING Benefit Concert is to support the amazing work of VICCIR (Vancouver Island Counselling Centre for Immigrants and Refugees - co-founded by Adrienne Carter) www.viccir.org/ . The work they do with newcomers to Canada who have experienced trauma (and sometimes torture) is truly life-changing. However, like other agencies serving newcomers, VICCIR has recently experienced major funding cuts from the federal government. So we're trying to help and have lined up more than 60 amazing performers in a show sure to bring joy and hope to those who experience it. Full information and tickets online are available at: https://hopeandbelonging.eventbrite.ca Printed tickets may also be purchased at VICCIR (by cash or cheque) at #100 - 850 Blanshard St., Tel. 778-404-1777. Advanced tickets are recommended. (They are less expensive and concerts produced by REACH! sometimes sell out in advance.) You can see a past performance here: https://www.westcoastreach.org/shows.html For more infomation visit: http://stphilipvictoria.ca/events/hope-belonging-benefit-concert/2025-05-24
