Stewardship, Commitment, Community

Stewardship, Commitment, Community

- From Allen's Desk

Dear Friends, thank you for your ongoing support of St. Philip as we seek to be faithful partners in God's Mission here in Oak Bay and different parts of the world.  The communication below is to keep you abreast of your financial contributions to our parish; it is only part of what "stewardship" is about, but an important part it is.

Your commitment to be followers of Christ in practical and tangible ways through the sharing of your time, your talents, and your treasure is the "glue" that the Holy Spirit uses to knit our community together.  I'm finding that the rumours that preceded my arrival were true; you really are committed to making St. Philip a parish "a spacious place of welcome" as you invite each other to revitalize your faith!  I'm discovering that you are living with authenticity in your families, friendships and workplaces.  It encourages me deeply that you are committed to reaching out to those in need around us and in different areas of the world.

Please let me know how I might better support your life and work, and know that I'm available for conversation however that works best for you.

Mark's Q2 Update from the Treasurer has gone out to the parish as a standalone email, and is linked below as well.

Summer projects

Summer projects

The narthex painting job is finished and carpet will go in on August 19.

The outside of the church has been powerwashed, sanded and prepared for painting and other much-needed improvements.  A new cross is being built by Ken Davidson.  Volunteers are still needed to paint railings, walls and trim.  Anyone who wishes to help will be welcome beginning 9 am Friday, August 9 and Saturday, August 10.

Thank you to the many volunteers so far who have helped prepare the church for this big job.  Ken Davidson is making a new cross for the outside wall facing the parking lot. The roof will be cleaned August 15.  The goal is to refresh the church to make it more inviting and welcoming by the end of August.

Remembering Herbert O'Driscoll

Remembering Herbert O'Driscoll

October 17, 1928 – July 25, 2024

The Rev. Canon Thomas Herbert O’Driscoll passed away on Thursday, July 25, in Victoria, at the age of 95. He was surrounded by family. Herb, as he was known to many, was born in Cork, Ireland in 1928. Herb and his wife, Paula, moved to Canada in 1957, where he served in several parishes in Ottawa, and as a Navy chaplain in Halifax. In 1968, Herb took up the position of Rector of Christ Church Cathedral, Vancouver and Dean of the Diocese of New Westminster. Herb served for ten years in the late 80s and early 90s as Rector of Christ Church, Elbow Park in Calgary, Alberta.

Herb and Paula retired to Victoria in the mid-90s, and Herb served as honorary assistant at the Cathedral. Herb is survived by his wife, Paula, his four children, eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life for Herbert O'Driscoll will be held at Christ Church Cathedral, Victoria at 2pm on Saturday, October 5. The service will be livestreamed on the cathedral website for those who cannot attend in person. In lieu of flowers, donations are welcomed to the BC Cancer Foundation (directed to melanoma research) or Sorrento Centre.
