Holy Week 2024Theme: Sticking Close to Jesus in Jerusalem During Lent we journey with Jesus towards his destiny in Jerusalem. This is far more than simply “remembering incidents along the way” but more an “inhabiting these stories” so that we feel their existential pull in our souls. Once Jesus arrives in Jerusalem, the Gospels do an interesting thing: narrative time starts to slow down. This is so that we will recognize that these events are central, but this also helps us “inhabit these stories” with a deliberation that is a step up from what we’ve been doing during the rest of Lent. Drawing from the Jewish tradition of physically enacting the central feasts, the early Church recognized that the Holy Week stories were more than stories, they were a “sacred space” within which a congregation could physically live into the events described. This physical enacting is not some religious ritual which we perform for its own sake, but for the purpose of deepening our experience and love for Christ. I have found that parishioners who regularly participate in the events of Holy Week find that the rest of the Church year is informed by and interpreted by these events; they become a lens through which we understand God’s love for each of us and what it means for God to be “all in” with respect to the world. Family activity - Easter Butterfliesfrom the Altar Guild As we bring our church to life at Easter with a celebration of flowers and greenery and other decorations, this year we will include bright paper butterflies as a sign of new life and transformations. Everyone can join in to create a “flock” of beautiful paper butterflies! Shapes to colour will be at the back of the church and downstairs at coffee time. Take a sheet (or several), colour/paint/decorate with your favourite medium, and return them to the church over the next 3 Sundays, until March 24, Palm Sunday. They will be cut out and wired for use in the beautiful Easter decorations . For templates to print and decorate at home, click here - Jenni Jennings |

13, 20 March at St George's: “Where did all the young people go?”
Fr Allen notes - if you're looking for a Lenten study, consider attending this: For decades we’ve been wondering and worrying about our young people leaving our beloved church. For 4 Wednesday mornings this Lent, join Bp Anna and Rev Christine to explore the social, spiritual, religious and theological movements of the late 20th century. What happened in the wake of the great optimism of the 1960’s? Why haven’t any of the many approaches we’ve tried to engage young people over the decades worked in the long term? And finally, what are some of the emerging ideas and practices of 21st century Christianity and beyond? Where might we go from here? The second session covered the societal paradigm shift (particularly in North America) of the 1990s, and how it affected church life, thought, and attendance. Links cited: Emerge podcast Dates: Wed. March 13, 20 (shocking spoiler alert: there is no silver bullet solution!) There will be a St Philip contingent at future sessions, online and in person - see you there! Fr Allen recommends: Diocesan conference 13 AprilWe Together 2024 Registration for We Together 2024 is open! This year the Conference will be at St. John the Divine in Victoria on April 13th. We Together is our regular (once every other year) diocesan conference to remind us of the ways we are connected; we are stronger together. We are bound in countless ways, in our structures, in our prayers, and through the stories we tell. We are each other's concern, and we are each other's gift. This year we are continuing to focus on our context, building on the "here in this place" theme from We Together 2022 we will be looking at what it means to serve and minister in the most non-religious context in North America. We have unique challenges, and unique opportunities. The conference will begin on Friday evening April 12th with an evening banquet at the Baumann Centre followed by an opening address by our Executive Director, Brendon Neilson. On Saturday we will gather at St. John the Divine in Victoria featuring our keynote speaker John Thatamanil, our Diocesan Theologian. John will be presenting two sessions with small group dialogue following each. We will end our time with the celebration of the Eucharist with Bishop Anna preaching and presiding.
