From Allen's DeskThank you and Holy Week Thanks to all who helped me celebrate my first anniversary in the parish; thanks for the cards and mementos, including a guide to seashells on the beaches. The nautical themes in the cards and the seashell guide leave me with a feeling that you want me to “keep exploring” and that, together, we’ll be able to navigate the straits and tides ahead of us. In other words we’re on the good ship “S.S. St. Philip,” and not the “S.S. Minnow” (let the reader understand). Holy Week: a few weeks ago I put out a Holy Week invitation and guide. I hope you’ve been able to look at it, and that you’re up for the adventure in the week ahead. Thanks to all who have already signed up for the two sittings of the Agape Meal on Maundy Thursday, there’s still plenty of room for others to sign up ,so please do so this Sunday. This year’s Good Friday service is “family friendly.” It’s a “Stations of the Cross” service. We allude to Jesus’ suffering but no scene is focused on physical or emotional suffering. It’s important for each age group to engage the message of Good Friday in ways that are psychologically appropriate. |

Asking for a Frond...Palm Sunday greenery Instead of palm fronds this year, everyone is invited to bring something long and leafy from their gardens for Palm Sunday. Do you have pussywillows, or forsythia starting to bloom? A rosemary bush? Or maybe you or a neighbour might even have a palm tree with a spare frond or two? Not everyone has access to suitable greenery, so if you're able, please bring an extra frond to share. |

Agape Meal & Maundy Thursday service
Agape Meal – Thursday March 28 Sign up today for our Agape Meal. Sign up sheets are in the narthex – or let Anna in the church office know you want to attend. We will hold two Agape Meal sittings in the St. Philip basement – 5 pm and 7 pm on Thursday, March 28 to begin the three holy days leading to Easter. The Agape Meal is a simple meal of lentil soup, bread, cheese and wine accompanied by spiritual readings and reflections. After the second sitting, we'll transition to a special worship service upstairs, starting about 8pm. Two sittings are being organized because the basement has room for only 50-60 people and we want everyone who wishes to attend to be able to do so as we journey with Jesus towards the cross and the empty tomb. Soup makers, food buyers, set up and take down people, dish washers are needed. Everyone is welcome! - Ceal McLean For more infomation visit: http://stphilipvictoria.ca/events/agape-meal-maundy-thursday-service/2024-03-28

Easter Cross
Nine years ago when I built the Easter flower cross, I wrote a little description to explain my thought process in crafting it. Many at St. Philip will, perhaps, remember it. Here it is again in time for your meditation on the Cross in Holy Week. - Larry Anthony For more infomation visit:

Easter bring and share
All are invited to bring a favourite Easter treat, sweet or savoury, to share following the morning services on Easter Sunday, 31 March. For those coming to the 8 am we’ll enjoy those upstairs, for those coming to the 9:30 we’ll enjoy them with our coffee and tea in the hall. NB Fr. Allen will be breaking his Lenten fast from sweet baked goods, and cinnamon buns are his favourite ;) |

Family activity - Easter Butterfliesfrom the Altar Guild As we bring our church to life at Easter with a celebration of flowers and greenery and other decorations, this year we will include bright paper butterflies as a sign of new life and transformations. Everyone can join in to create a “flock” of beautiful paper butterflies! Shapes to colour will be at the back of the church and downstairs at coffee time. Take a sheet (or several), colour/paint/decorate with your favourite medium, and return them to the church by March 24, Palm Sunday. They will be cut out and wired for use in the beautiful Easter decorations . For templates to print and decorate at home, click here - Jenni Jennings |
