In the troubling parable of the landowner and labourers in Matthew 20, Jesus appears to sweep aside all considerations of fairness. Instead he points his audience to a consideration of the generosity of the landowner. This is neither a lack of compassion nor an endorsement of unfair labour practices. It is a guide to a rich and deep spiritual life.
