It is the Vancouver School of Theology’s great pleasure to invite you to the 2025 Somerville Lecture on Thursday, October 2 at 7:00 pm at Epiphany Chapel and online. Supported through the generosity of Archbishop David Somerville, a former VST faculty member, the Somerville Lecture Series began in the early 1990s when students sought a place to explore the spiritual side of life and share practices for seeking God’s presence. Today, it continues as a space to reflect on the spiritual, theological, and political challenges of our time.

We are honoured to welcome Sara Miles as this year’s lecturer. Sara is the author of Take This Bread: A Radical Conversion; Jesus Freak: Feeding Healing Raising the Dead; and City of God: Faith in the Streets. She served as Director of Ministry at St. Gregory of Nyssa Episcopal Church in San Francisco, is the founder and director of The Food Pantry, and developed immigrant accompaniment programs for Faith in Action Bay Area. Her journalism has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, and on National Public Radio.

Sara's lecture "Solidarity Forever: Faith and Politics" will reflect deeply on the meaning of solidarity in our relationships—with God, with each other, and within systems of power. In this divided moment, what does solidarity mean for our relationships, and how can faith guide us in confronting today’s political challenges?

The Somerville Lecture 2025 will explore these spiritual, practical, and political dimensions of solidarity at a time when communities, including faith communities, are deeply divided.
