Voter turnout in local elections is generally poor, some elected offices get filled by acclimation, trust in decision-making processes is low, and conflict has become endemic.
Democracy doesn’t have to be this way.
A presentation by journalist Richard Johnson, co-author of the inspiring new book Democracy’s Second Act: Why Politics Needs the Public, aims to get at the practical measures we can adopt at the local level to restore our local democracy to health and improve the quality and durability of local decision-making. A conversation with Johnson, facilitated by award-winning former legislative bureau chief for the Vancouver Sun and CTV BC and former CHEK news anchor Jim Beatty, will follow the presentation.
The talk is hosted by the Community Association of Oak Bay.
