Liturgy Working Group report

Liturgy Working Group report

The Liturgy Working Group met several times to discuss ways that the 9:30 service can help as many people in the St. Philip community as possible experience God in our worship.

Some of the things we are continuing to work on include:

  • Allowing people to participate in a variety of ways by striking a balance between silence, songs and hymns, chants, praying aloud in unison, and listening. There is a place for all these modes in our spacious worship.
  • Expanding opportunities to contribute in specific roles such as adults serving in the Eucharist or children helping with the dismissal.
  • Expressing a welcoming theology through imagery and language that is inclusive and sensitive in its references to God and people.
  • Keeping the services shorter – aiming for an hour and a quarter.

It is always a work in progress.  Please continue to let us, worship leaders, and the Parish Council know your ideas and share your experience of worship at St. Philip.

Church picnic - save the date

Church picnic - save the date

Sunday, June 23, 2024

At the service nearest the end of the academic year, on June 23rd there will be a special prayer and blessing for those graduating from any level or program of education this year, or for those transitioning from one school to another.  Please send Allen names of people you know so we may celebrate their achievement together (incumbent@stphilipvictoria.ca).

Also, please join us on the lawn right after the 9.30 service on June 23rd for fun and fellowship at our parish picnic.  Picnic food will be provided, including salads/veggie trays, hotdogs and ice cream; vegetarian and gluten-free options will be available.  Notwithstanding this, you are welcome to contribute a salad or other dish!  Although we are trying to keep the picnic simple, volunteers will be needed to set up and take down tables, work in the kitchen, clean up, and grill the hotdogs.  Sign-up sheets for all these things will be in the narthex.

Veggie Gardeners - Grow A Row

Veggie Gardeners - Grow A Row

for Shelbourne Community Kitchen

Dear St. Philip Community

One of the missions we support as a church is the Shelbourne Community Kitchen. We are hoping to provide them with some fresh produce this summer by asking parishioners who love to garden to “grow a row”. It is easy to do and any amount is appreciated. Please see below for more information. If you participate, please take some pictures of your planting or harvest with your family and post them downstairs on the Shelbourne Community Kitchen board, or email digital images to admin@stphilipvictoria,  so we can all enjoy your good works.

There are also opportunities to volunteer in the Kitchen and work with others to prepare nutritious meals for the community. FYI They serve about 1500 people regularly! Details are linked below and of course on their website https://www.shelbournecommunitykitchen.ca/

Beer and Hymns at the Cathedral: Send us your favourites!

Beer and Hymns at the Cathedral: Send us your favourites!

On Friday, June 7, the music team at Christ Church Cathedral will be hosting a fun-filled event for the cathedral’s operating fund. An evening of hymn singing with a side of beer (and other alc and non-alc libations!) is a format which is gradually gaining momentum across this continent and the UK. But we need your input to ensure its success. When we polled the CCC community in 2020 for their favourite hymns, “Be thou my vision,” “How great thou art,” and “Guide me O” were at the top of the list. Has anything changed since then?

Let us know your favourite hymn by filling out this form. If you’re lucky, it might become part of the set list for the Beer and Hymns singalong on Friday, June 7 at 7pm. But if it doesn’t, don’t despair because we’re deliberately leaving some spots blank to allow the participants an opportunity to vote for their favourites on the night!

Fill out the form here: https://forms.gle/pkpTACNqhTwkFArt6

What: Beer & Hymns
Where: Christ Church Cathedral
When: Friday, June 7, 7.30pm
How much: Admission by donation (all proceeds from the door go to the operating fund)
