St Philip Parish Retreat
Prayer is as essential as the air we breathe. Join us Saturday, September 28 at St. Stephen's Anglican Church (7921 St Stephens Rd) from roughly 9-3 for St. Philip's prayer retreat. We will learn about and practice the Examen prayer, wander 7 acres of pastoral beauty during times of prayer and reflection, and quietly draw closer to God as a church family. Although prayer is our focus, we'll briefly explore a new paradigm for the church called Invite, Welcome, Connect that we'd like to discuss as a body. |

National Day for Truth and ReconciliationMonday, September 30, 2024 Monday is National Truth and Reconciliation Day. It is appropriate to wear orange to church this Sunday if you so wish. We pray for our Indigenous friends and fellow citizens and for ourselves as we seek God's truth and reconciliation in all our relationships and in our society. - Allen+ For the fourth year in a row, the ReconciliACTION Oak Bay Network is hosting a community ceremony in front of Sno'uyutth Welcome Pole at Oak Bay High School - near the main building, on Cadboro Bay Road between Cranmore & Epworth. This year's ceremony will again start at 9.30 am so as not to conflict with the Regional Powwow. The Powwow honours and recognizes survivors of Indian Residential and Day Schools and their families, the Sixties Scoop and the children who never made it home from these institutions. It also celebrates Indigenous cultures and resiliency, and brings people together in celebration to build bridges amongst all Nations. Youth ministry update
We are saddened to announce that Gavin McGhee has stepped down from his position as youth worker. We are very grateful for his work over the past year, but he has found he was simply too busy with other commitments to continue his St. Philip work. Gavin is a much-loved member of our St. Philip family, and we wish him well. Please pray for discernment as Parish Council works to support our youth in their journey with God. |

Flowers for Thanksgivingfrom the Altar Guild On Sundays Sept. 29th and Oct. 6th, an Altar Guild member will have a collection envelope in the Narthex for monetary contributions, to be used toward purchasing flowers for decorating the church for Thanksgiving (13 October). In past years we’ve collected food donations for the Shelbourne Community Kitchen, but they suggest monetary donations through their website for the best food value. They have access to bulk purchasing, wholesale prices, and discounts, to make every dollar go further than we can by buying individually in the grocery store. Here’s the link if you would like to support their good work: CLICK HERE On Saturday, Oct. 12th, Come join the Altar Guild from 9am in decorating for Thanksgiving! We’ll be adding colour and celebration through flowers and Fall displays… your help is needed! Do you have greenery and/or flowers to donate toward decorating? Please drop them off at the church on Friday the 11th, outside the ramp doors. Buckets of water will be available. For more infomation visit:

Thank You!
Thank you to the 25 volunteers who put in more than 500 hours of labour over the summer to renew our narthex inside and out by repairing, sanding, building and painting. Particular thanks go to Ged McLean for coordinating and doing much of the work and to Ken Davidson who built the new cross. Names of the volunteers who participated and a list of the work done can be found on the bulletin board in the church basement — both lists too long to include here! Thank you everyone! The entire project was an investment of about $27,000 to make our physical space more inviting and welcoming — $19,000 for the interior carpet/painting and $8,000 for the exterior work but would have cost at least $50-100,000 more without so many people pitching in to help. Our 2024 budget passed $15,000 for these expenses and parish council approved covering the additional expenses at the June council meeting. More details will be available in our AGM reports. |

Parish Council Decisions
Parish Council held its most recent meeting on Tuesday, September 24. We discussed many topics but made several decisions we'd like the congregation to know about. 1) To comply with CRA rules fully, we will take a special offering to support Mar Elias Church in Syria on October 27. 2) Funds that had been designated to Mar Elias will instead go to an Anglican hospital in Gaza via the PWRDF [LINK] and a local ministry where the missions committee will also organize a volunteer day. 3) The budget process has begun. We will hold two congregational consultation meetings, Sunday October 20 after church and Tuesday, October 29 in the evening, to share highlights and get the congregation's feedback. 4) We have an interim plan to minister to youth while we pull out all the stops to find a new youth worker in light of Gavin's recent resignation. 5) We will hire Postmeridian Productions [LINK] on a 3 month trial basis to improve our social media and website outreach so we can become more inviting to people in our local community who are seeking God. Our next parish council meeting is on Tuesday, October 22 at 7 pm at the church. All are welcome to attend. Approved minutes (most recent July 2024) can be found on the website [LINK]. Printed paper of all kinds has been less in evidence than usual over the summer while the narthex has been updated, but minutes are always available in electronic or printed form on request from the office. |
