Helping a Family from Gaza Come to Safety

Helping a Family from Gaza Come to Safety

Many of you will remember Robert Oppenheimer of Emanu-el Synagogue in downtown Victoria.  He came to speak at St. Philip a year and a half ago along with Fatima Haidari to seek support for bringing her sister and family from Pakistan.  They are Afghan Hazaras who had fled the Taliban takeover.  The family has since arrived and settled in Victoria.

In the wake of last October's attacks and the war that followed, Robert started a Jewish-Palestinian dialogue group here in Victoria.  The group is now assisting with fundraising to help Omar Omar, a Palestinian man in Vancouver, who is trying to bring his extended family of twenty people from the Northern part of Gaza to the Lower Mainland.

Omar's family would come under a Canadian government family reunification program.  It is comparable to the one which allowed Ukrainians to come on short notice on a temporary basis without going through the whole refugee process.  Like the Ukrainians, they are technically not refugees.  The government is not providing any financial support for the Gazans, only an expedited process so they could arrive in a few weeks rather than years.  Because it is not a refugee sponsorship through a charity, Omar is raising the money through a Go Fund Me campaign, and there is no charitable tax receipt. He is trying to raise $100,000 but Robert thinks he will eventually need $200,000.

Robert and Omar will come to St. Philip on Sunday, May 5th and speak during announcement time.

Below is a link to Omar's Go Fund Me page with detailed information about his family’s situation etc.
